Notes:

This novena* booklet is meant to be read aloud during the "Fiesta de la Divina Misericordia" (the Feast of the Divine Mercy or Divine Mercy Sunday) and it contains prayers that revolve around christian unity, prayers for clerical authorities, prayers for the non-devoted or "indifferent souls," prayers for people devoted to spread the cult to "Divina Misericordia," and prayers to diminish the suffering of souls in the purgatory. The Mercy of God is a devotion of Polish origins started by St. Faustina Kowalska; the devotion focuses on the christian philosophy of atonement. Followers perform internal and external acts of devotion: external: veneration of the Divine Mercy image (a painting by Adolf Hyla), the observation of the "Merciful hour" (by saying the "coronilla" and other prayers), the Feast of the Divine Mercy, and practicing merciful acts for the "less fortunate." --- (*) Novenas are a very popular devotion in Mexico and Latin America in general. They consist of prayers said nine successive days, reciting the rosary. People usually gather in a neighbour's house, and the host reads the prayers from a novena booklet, which works both as guide for the steps to follow and as a prayers book. There are several types of novenas and types of requests associated to a religious character or topic in each booklet.
